Creative Prayer no.9 , by Jenny Mossman
So it’s Christmas and paper-chain season again! I suggested a paper- chain last year; this one is a bit different though. My favourite Psalm (100) says ‘enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise’. Well, last Christmas we entered His gates with our ‘Thank You’ prayer- chain – let’s now enter His courts!
For this prayer chain, ask everyone to write a praise to God on each paper link – I call these ‘wow’ prayers. As you write let the children use their own words. They may not know words such as ‘Omnipresent’, ‘Omnipotent’ or ‘infinite’, so praises such as, ‘God you are really big’ or ‘I think you are brilliant’ are perfect. Remember that God ordains His praises from the mouths of babies and children (Psalm 8), so it’s ok for you to let your children express themselves any way they feel comfortable with!
As ‘The Message’ puts it:
Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you;
toddlers shout the songs
That drown out enemy talk,
and silence atheist babble.
Little ones might want to draw their praises or you may need a family scribe.
This might be a bit harder than the ‘thank you’ chain, but keep chatting about God and all the amazing things He has done – such as creation, the escape across the Red Sea, the Walls of Jericho, Jesus’ miracles, Jesus’ resurrection, Pentecost – not forgetting His goodness, kindness and love (John 3:16). See how long you can make your chain as you enter His courts!
Happy Praying, a very Happy Christmas and every blessing for 2012.
